In this one, book #8 in the series, it is just after the Civil War has ended and even though slavery was abolished, the South will not accept that their way of life is gone forever. Some of them are still trying to hold onto to the old way of life no matter what the cost. Which makes living in the south dangerous for all blacks or anyone who stands with the blacks. We, once again, follow Carrie Cromwell Borden, on her journey through life and the amazing things this woman accomplishes. If you are a person who enjoys reading about the Civil War Era, I think you will love this book. At times, throughout the reading of this series, the politics were a bit daunting for me, but the politics are necessary for one to know what is happening in the country at the time. It is my opinion that Ginny Dye is a genius at being a writer. It is so very obvious that she's had to put hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into research in order to write this magnificent series The Bregdan Chronicles. It is the very best account of life in the south before, during, and after the Civil War that I have ever read. I just hate that I must wait another year before reading book# 9.Review: This is the #8 of a 9 book series dealing with the lives and horror of the Civil War. I have never been so emotionally involved with books as I have with the Bregdan Chronicles. I have learned so much about how the war started, and the fact that after the war the abolitionists, black people, and Southerners were still at war. Many lives were lost years after the war. A different kind of war. I also felt like I was a character in the book. I felt so deeply involved with each character. Putting the book down just to get dinner was hard. Trying to hang in there until Book 9 comes out – although in the meantime I highly recommend Joseph's Dream to anybody else who is slightly obsessed with this kind of historical fiction...The final novel (so far) in the Bregdan Chronicles, Shifted with the Winds is a slower, more thoughtful, more personal book than its prequels. Even Carried Forward by Hope and Glimmers of Change, which both take place after the end of the Civil War, deal with race riots, displaced families, and KKK demonstrations, as well as the worst maritime disaster in American history.Shifted with the Winds begins in a similar vein, with a harrowing, edge-of-your-seat climax, when the so-called firefighters burn down the new cholera hospital in Moyamensing, while Carrie, Janie, and the other women medical students narrowly escape. This really grabs the reader's attention from the very first page, but the rest of the entire book focuses on the social interactions and family histories of the characters. By contrast with the earlier books in the series, Shifted with the Winds is more of a social drama than a war drama, and in some ways I like it even better.My favorite scene recreates the Harvest Festival Tournament from Storm Clouds Rolling In, where Carrie first fell in love with Robert. The 1860 Tournament and the 1866 Tournament are perfect bookends that show exactly how much Cromwell Plantation has changed during the war years. Now the women and the freed slaves are jousting, and a little girl wins because the grownups all work too hard to have time to practice. What seemed like a big important competition in 1860 is now just a game, a nostalgic recreation of the past that only serves to highlight how far gone that past actually is.And yet, the past is never entirely over for Ginny Dye. The slower-paced plot of this last book allows for a more thorough discussion of the Bregdan Principle, which I like to think of as Ginny's personal mission statement. Long, thoughtful discussions between Carrie and Biddy trace the long-term impact of a person's choices and actions, whether the person in question is Oliver Cromwell or Carrie Cromwell.When Carrie and Thomas go into emotional tailspins after learning that their famous ancestor was personally responsible for enslaving hundreds of thousands of Irish, Ginny Dye is speaking to us directly from her own experiences. Just like Carrie tries to redeem her family's past by dropping out of medical school to go fight cholera in the Irish neighborhood, Ginny writes these books because her family owned slaves for generations. I will admit at first I was a bit disconcerted by the overall lack of simple editing along with the number of spelling & grammatical errors. Also, the pages were not printed to fit the format of the book very well. I had a book of my own printed a number of years ago so I know the expense of putting all of this together. It amazes me with the endless research and detail woven into the stories of the various characters and their lives that Ginny wouldn't have paid more attention to how the books present when it came down to the final approval. Her writing is great and her story lines are impacting so to discount the way the final thing is put together is a frustrating disappointment.I have been an avid fan of history my entire life. These books reveal the tumult and agonies of the Civil War years and the inbred attitudes identified with Southern prejudice incredibly. When I studied the Civil War in school we memorized dates, generals' names and big battles but I held little appreciation for what the war released into a society so narrowly confined and broken apart. I knew blacks were despised but I was unaware of the deeply rooted persecution of women from the Southern perspective. It baffles my mind to think how hard these progressive women fought to earn the vote or bring any clear sighted ambitions into society with such agonizing effort. The North & South were both guilty of stifling women and pigeon-holing them under men's control all because of inequality. A fine mind with a questioning attitude threatened more than informed and it was essentially because men wanted to keep women helpless, uninformed and ignorant. Thank God there were lots of strong voices who refused to submit.This entire series is a rich story about beliefs, ambitions and wondrous accomplishments by women who fought their ways to success and placed themselves into history so other women could build on their shoulders to achieve all the more. It's no "Gone With the Wind" because it encompasses a variety of characters, plots, historical folks who influenced so much and more. It's beautifully researched and although a novel, so many details are woven into the thrust of the story you almost believe it's true. I know some of the vital incidents did happen so the beloved folks we get to know from all the books become as vivid in their parts of the telling as though they were actually a part of what happened. As I've been reading I've wished somehow it could become required study for any & all students of history because it brings home the real accounts of how so much hatred and prejudice thrived in the deep south and many parts of all our USA. Recent movies and all the strife felt from the headlines of today validate that it's a monumental struggle still today in 2019. Ginny has put forth a fabulous telling and I for one am so grateful because it's made a huge addition to my understanding of racial differences and the origins of differences among folks. I feel I am a better person because I value what I've learned as a result of all these books. Ginny Dye deserves a huge vote of credit for all she has put forth for anyone to learn, I simply wish she had been as prolific with her editing skills after all the unbelievable work she put into telling the tale.
